Please note new date and time: Tuesday, June 12th, 5:30 PM – 8:30 PM
Bob Thomas, Parks Alliance founder and Board President, and Paul Steinke, Preservation Alliance Executive Director, will be your guides for this special tour of Fairmount Park history by bicycle.
Join the “Alliance Wheelmen” on a ride exploring the many historic landmarks that dot East Park, the 650-acre section of Fairmount Park along the east side of the Schuylkill River.
From Boathouse Row, you will follow scenic park drives to the country seats whose estates formed the original core of the park. Bob and Paul will share stories of historic preservation wins and losses, landscape restoration, and the creative uses of public infrastructure that have defined Fairmount Park from its nineteenth-century beginnings. Highlights include the park houses Lemon Hill, Laurel Hill, Woodford, and Strawberry Mansion, and the Discovery Center, a wildlife sanctuary and environmental education center under construction on the former East Park Reservoir.
Continue on to Laurel Hill Cemetery, where you will see firsthand how partnerships with private landholders extend the benefits of the public park system. Enjoy the guides’ favorite vistas before making the return trip along Kelly Drive.
This tour will last approximately 3 hours and will begin and end at the Cosmic Cafe at Lloyd Hall, 1 Boathouse Row, Philadelphia, PA 19130.
Terrain and difficulty: Route includes some hill climbing, e.g. Lemon Hill, and on-road bike lanes.
