The area of what is today East Falls was originally home to the Lenni Lenape Indians, then the Swedes, and more recently home to Italian and Irish immigrants. The most recent wave of immigrants settled in the area to work in the many factories along the Delaware River. Dobson Mills, which produced blankets for the civil war and later rugs and textiles, was one of the major employers along with the breweries and fisheries. East Falls has evolved from a small mill town to an urban community.
The neighborhood is completely diverse along ethnic, age and economical factors. Younger families find the neighborhood desirable because it is an affordable community offering free recreational features, such as the river, and proximity to business districts for employment and proximity to public transportation. The economic status of the community is equally diverse offering condos, apartments, row homes, twin homes and single homes on private lanes. The community is home to many long-time residents including a prominent politicians, judges and civic leaders.
