Facts for Journalists

Who we are:

The Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia is a 501(c)3 nonprofit, organization with 2,000 members, governed by a 20-member board of directors.

Our mission:

The Preservation Alliance for Greater Philadelphia actively promotes the appreciation, protection and revitalization of the Philadelphia region’s historic buildings, communities and landscapes.

Our key program areas:

Protecting the region’s historic properties through advocacy is the primary mission of the Preservation Alliance. We actively monitor the Philadelphia Historical Commission and other regulatory bodies, and comment, testify and, where necessary, take legal action regarding private and public commercial and residential redevelopment projects affecting local and National Register historic districts and properties in Philadelphia and adjacent counties. To draw attention to upcoming challenges, we produce an annual Endangered Properties List. Learn more.

The Preservation Alliance holds preservation easements on more than 220 residential and commercial properties of all sizes, styles and periods. These properties have permanent legal protection from demolition or inappropriate alteration. Learn more.

The Alliance actively educates the public about historic preservation and the unique historic character of the region through publications, its website and special events, including free or low-cost workshops and lectures and the annual Old House Fair. The Neighborhood Preservation Program and Regional Initiative provide technical assistance, training and other forms of support to communities throughout the region. In Philadelphia, the Alliance conducts a special outreach to residents of the city’s historic African-American neighborhoods. Learn more.

The Alliance recognizes achievements in historic preservation through its annual Preservation Achievement Awards, given at the Awards Luncheon during Preservation Month (May) and with its Awards of Recognition, given to homeowners at the Old House Fair in March. Learn more.
