Neighborhood:Center City

Address:
1923-27 Lombard St.
Philadelphia, PA 19146

Significance:
Founded ca. 1873, the Allen Chapel congregation built its first home ca. 1873 at this site. According to Cooperman, the congregation moved sometime around 1910 to 1701-1711 Bainbridge Street (see entry). The former Allen Chapel was then occupied by the Phillips Brooks Church or Chapel from 1910 through at least 1942. A congregation listed as "St. Phillip's Church" (probably in error) hired Thomas Early ca. 1930 to do substantial alterations or rebuilding on the site. The Phillips Brooks congregation remained at this address through 1962, but the building is not currently in congregation use.
