Founded in 1895 by Dr. Nathan Mossell (1856-1946), one of the first black graduates of the Medical School of the University of Pennsylvania, the Frederick Douglass Memorial Hospital was the first hospital to be staffed entirely by African Americans.

Opened in 1895 as the first hospital for Blacks in this city, this facility trained and employed Black medical professionals who were excluded from other hospitals. In 1948, it merged to form Mercy-Douglass Hospital.
