Significance:
Hog Island was a major industrial center during and after World War I, building 122 ships over four years. The Armstrong Association (see entry) placed black workers in skilled jobs here and secured housing for them. The site was purchased by the city in 1930, and has been consumed by Philadelphia Airport runways.
