Significance:
Established in 1886 in a "small hired house" at 4012 Ludlow Street, this Episcopalian mission for handicapped black children was one of the first of its kind in the city. The organization grew rapidly after it moved to the corner of 43rd and Wallace Streets the next year. By 1930, the mission expanded to include surgical treatment and mental, religious and industrial training for children. The "plant" included 603 N. 43rd Street (rectory), 605-7 N. 43rd (girls house), 609-11 N. 43rd (boys house), 613-15 N. 43rd (a modern apartment house for families), a permanent chapel for the House and a Mission Chapel for West Philadelphia residents.
