Significance:
Founded in 1827, the Asbury Methodist Episcopal congregation is the oldest Methodist organization in West Philadelphia. The congregation first worshipped in an old Quaker schoolhouse at the corner of Oak Street (now Ludlow Street) and Crammond Street (now 33rd Street). The congregation built its first church building here in 1829, and enlarged it in 1850. In 1883, the congregation built a larger stone structure on the church's former burial ground, after the graves were reinterred in Mt. Moriah Cemetery. The church burned down in 1997 while undergoing renovations for secular use.
