Significance:
In 1928, Virginia Alexander, a 1925 graduate of the Women's Medical College, established this lying-in hospital and well-baby clinic, to help reduce the mortality rates of African-American mothers and babies. The clinic occupied the first two floors of her home; she lived on the third floor. Known as the "guardian of the health of Negro women," she was the sister of Raymond Pace Alexander (1897-1974, see entry).
