Significance:
Dr. Henry Minton (1870-1946) established Mercy Hospital in 1907 at 17th and Fitzwater Streets (see entry). The hospital created a training school that year as well, and in 1919, moved the hospital to a larger building at this location that formerly housed the Protestant Episcopal Divinity School. In 1948, Mercy merged with Frederick Douglass Memorial Hospital (see entry). Mercy-Douglass Hospital closed in 1973.
