Bainbridge Street Methodist Church / Associated Presbyterian Church Site

Neighborhood:South

Address:
1122-1128 Bainbridge St.
Philadelphia, PA 19147

Significance:
Founded in 1844, the John Wesley Methodist Church congregation (see entry) moved from its home around 732 Bainbridge Street to this location by 1873, when it became known as the Bainbridge Street Methodist congregation. According to Cooperman, the congregation moved into the former Associated Presbyterian Church building, located at approximately 1122-1128 Bainbridge Street, in a lot bordered by Bainbridge Street, S. Marvine Street and S. Sartain Street. Alterations were made to the building in 1902 by Jacob Waschold. The congregation remained here until 1905, when under Rev. Charles A. Tindley's leadership, it moved to its current home at 762 S. Broad Street (see entry). The former church property was then occupied by a garage, and is currently a paved parking lot with no structures above grade.
