Significance:
Dr. Albert C. Barnes (1872-1928) was an early and enthusiastic collector of black artists such as Horace Pippin, as well as involved in African American social and cultural issues. Inventor of the pharmaceutical product Argyrol, Barnes hung paintings in the loft of this West Philadelphia factory to be studied and discussed by his workers, and required attendance at two hours of lectures during each eight-hour work day.
