Significance:
Founded ca. 1817, the Bethany AME Church was an early congregations in what was then a rural community near the village of Holmesburg (now part of Philadelphia). According to Cooperman, the modest building was built by Elias Chase. The building survives, but the congregation uses another building nearby at 8898 Ashton Road as its main address.
