Significance:
Founded in 1859, Bethel A.M.E. Church is Germantown's only pre-Civil War black church. According to Cooperman, the church occupied this location from its founding until 1959, when it moved to 6153 Germantown Avenue (see entry). The congregation's original frame church was replaced by a Wissahickon schist and brick structure in 1893, and is currently occupied by the Mt. Vernon Baptist Church.
