Significance:
Founded in 1905, the Central Baptist congregation took over the former Pitman M. E. Church, on the northeast corner of Lombard and 23rd Streets, as their first building. According to Cooperman, the congregation remained there until completing a new building in 1923 a block away. The former church building was demolished by 1942, and the site is now occupied by rowhouses.
